The "Call:" Reduce Funeral Home Receivables By Offering Memorial Funds

One very difficult issue for funeral directors is handling indigent funerals and/or funerals that are not fully paid.

Funerals are big ticket purchases that often are not prepared for financially.

Funeral directors are people too and have bills just like everyone else, so its really unfair that directors are often put in the difficult situation of helping a family with little or no money.

One option to consider is setting your funeral home up to create "Memorial Funds" for these occasions.

For instance, Mobits offers merchant services for funeral homes. When one of our funeral homes has an indigent case, we do a Mobits (mobile-obituary) that has a "Make a Donation" button.

When the button is tapped, it opens a page on mobile phones that can accept donations from debit and credit cards.

Some families will use a service such as GoFundMe to raise money for a funeral, but the problem that can arise is a family getting the donations, but not passing on the funds necessary to the funeral home to fully pay for the funeral.

It is better for the funeral home to collect the funds directly and the best way to do that is to offer families Memorial Funds rather than families going to a third party like GoFundMe.

Then, if more money is collected than the funeral costs, the funeral home can refund the difference back to the family.

When funeral homes provide service, they should be paid promptly.

It's only fair.

Today’s technology is tomorrow’s tradition

This past week, we did a Mobits where the deceased was 69 when he died.

As you can see from the exhibit, his Mobits had 937 page views, 18 contact forms were completed and 22 people expressed their condolence using their smartphones and/or tablets.

When I talk to funeral directors about Mobits, I am regularly told that they feel Mobits is more appropriate for "younger people."

If that's true, then 69 must be the new 39.

Reading his condolences, it's clear these are not just "young people." If you want to see for yourself, text WillieD to 72727.

The key to getting more first calls is to get more people to check out your funeral home online. And most people online are there using mobile devices.

Mobits excels at getting people to look at your funeral home by getting people to look at their dearly departed's Mobits (each of which contains the funeral home's contact information).

Mobits is different and better because we figured out how to get people to go to the funeral home online by using text messages and mobile-websites.

937 people didn't view this Mobits, but its highly likely 200 to 400 people did. It also gave the funeral home several people for their mailing/marketing list. And most importantly, that Mobits is inside a good couple of hundred mobile phones.

It's a lot easier getting first calls when your funeral home is already in the smartphones of your target market.
Mobits might not be a tradition now, but with results like those above, Mobits will be a tradition tomorrow.

The "Call:" Give a church a mobile-app instead of fans

Almost every funeral home at some point has had church fans made as a marketing promotion.

And though it seems like a good idea, marketing success or results are hard to measure.

When "church fans" is searched for on Google, you will find most fans cost about 50 cents each. And for each church, you probably should order at least 500 fans, making the cost per church at around $250.

Why not consider giving a church a mobile-app instead?

Mobits is focused on the funeral industry, but at $250, we could provide a mobile-app for a church that would have a weekly sermon page, word of the week page, church calendar page, a pastor's page and of course, an obituary page.

The mobile-app would also include an advertisement for the funeral on every page and a click-to-call funeral home button as well.

Mobile-apps are "stickier" than church fans because once someone has the church app on their phone, they are unlikely to take it off.

How many times have you been at church and saw one of your fans in the garbage can and was tempted to take it out?!

Mobile-apps stay with the person, church fans often stay at the church. So the usefulness of church fans is extremely limited if they stay at the church.

If you are considering buying church fans, those dollars may be better spent on giving a church a mobile-app.
